Haunted New Orleans

There was a recent illustration auction that included a number of Gorey's including this Holiday magazine illustration. I've always loved it but it did feel stiffer then most of his work in its perspective . Especially with the lousy Canadian dollar the pieces for sale were out of reach for me tho I would have loved to have a couple of the other ones.  Last night flipping through one of my Victorian books I came across the reference for Gorey's illustration which was a nice surprise.

I"m doing an illustration an issue  horror host Karswell as well as the logo for the new pre-code mini series HORROS OF IT ALL. Amongst other things I'll post my progress for  it. Here two of illo roughs as well as lettering ideas. We are going with the bloody final one.

Went to Warhol and Turner shows in town. Both great especially the Turner.  Then went for drinks and good food at the recently opened Shameful Tiki.

I  came across this mammoth and beautiful book the other day at a incredible price. I  have a couple of books on him with more specific subject focus, but this is a beautifully reproduced collection of his major works till 68 with studies as well. I've been to the Wyeth museum several times in Chadds Ford  and always love it as I've always been a  huge fan of NC and Andrew (which I'm sure I've said on this blog before).  Should get back to posting drawings tomorrow.

here is the cabinet a little more stuffed and two favs...I'll need another cabinet for the Searle's.
Tho over time I've tried to get first or early editions of their books its a lot harder these days unless you want to spend a lot of money or luck out at used book store. Its cool that Pomegranate reprints Gorey's books but at the same time I've always wondered why on some of the books they don't just reprint them in the original size and format. they can be smaller or the covers fiddled with occasionally.

Its true I'm a Edward Gorey fan so I'm pretty happy to have this new (old) cabinet to put (some) of my collection in along with other things like Piccoli which is one of my favorite kids books ever. I've never been shy about my love for Paul Julian and I find it a crime that this is the only book he ever did.
